Contact

The telephone is quickest, most first questions having a one-sentence answer. An unanswered ring means a machine is running; a number left on the answerphone gets a call back the same day.

A commission enquiry is better by email, since a photograph of the room can come with it. One photograph outruns three paragraphs of description.

Workshop

Unit 6, Dean Lane Works
Dean Lane, Bedminster
Bristol BS3 1DD

Visits Thursday and Friday afternoons, 2–5pm, by arrangement.

Enquiry worksheet

A worksheet, not a postbox. Nothing entered below travels anywhere or is retained; the fields simply run in the order the workshop needs the facts. An ordinary email to [email protected] covering the same ground lands on the bench, and the telephone is faster still.

Email the workshop

Enquiry emails are kept for two years and used for nothing but the answer. No list, no newsletter, nothing passed on.

Worth including
  • A photograph of the space, taken from the doorway
  • Rough width, depth and height, approximate is fine
  • How many people have to sit at it
  • Anything awkward: a radiator, a sloping ceiling, a narrow stair
  • A piece from recent work that comes close, if one does
  • The real budget, which saves a fortnight
Getting here

Ten minutes' walk from Bedminster station. Bus stops on Dean Lane. No customer parking in the yard; street bays are pay-and-display until 6pm.

Deliveries in

Ring before bringing timber or a repair down. The arch is often shut because the bench is out fitting.

Asked most often

How long is the wait?

Four to six months from the quotation as a rule, plus the bench time for the piece itself. The commissions page lists typical bench times by piece.

Delivery beyond Bristol?

Yes. Included within the BS postcodes and the nearer parts of Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire; a day rate plus mileage past that, or a specialist carrier instead.

Can a photograph be copied?

Working in the spirit of something seen elsewhere, gladly. Reproducing an identifiable designer's piece, no. The picture is still worth sending: it shows what appeals.

Repairs to furniture made elsewhere?

Often, if it was made properly once. Photographs of the damage and of the whole piece decide it. Guidance on what is worth doing sits under Timber & Care.

Anything ready-made for sale?

Rarely. A small table or a stool comes off the bench between jobs now and again. Asking is the only way to learn what is standing in the shop this month.

A visit before committing?

Encouraged. There is nearly always a piece part-finished, and sample boards in every timber and finish used here. Thursday and Friday afternoons — see the studio.
